Schubert Musical and Literary Club of Oil City

Purpose:

 * Provide the understanding, study and performance of fine music;

 * Encourage talented young people to continue their education in music.

History: Organized October 19, 1896 as the Derthick Musical and Literary Society with membership limited to 20. In 1898 the club changed its name. In 1906 it joined the National Federation of Music Clubs and is a charter member of the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs. In 1913 the Junior Schubert Clubs were organized. They are the oldest junior clubs in Pennsylvania and second oldest in the United States.

Events: A scholarship, started by the Tuesday Musicale in 1948, is offered each year to a member of the Junior Schubert Club who plans to pursue a music career. The recipient must have been a club member for at least two years and have been accepted at an accredited college as a music major.

Membership: Senior club membership is open to anyone who enjoys music, whether or not a performer. Junior club members must study privately to be eligible for membership.

Meetings: Both the Senior club and Junior clubs meet on Mondays, starting in October and ending with a National Music Week celebration in May.

Location: Oil City, Pennsylvania is located in central Venango County about 90 miles north of Pittsburgh.
